Chris Allington – Hilti North America

This presentation will provide a refresher on firestop systems, current standards and testing methods, reviewing firestopping submittals, inspection issues and an overview of some typical applications. Additionally, this presentation will summarize the requirements, and address any confusion, regarding the third-party special inspections of firestopping systems and what role Rhode Island fire officials have in that process.

10:00 – 10:30am   Break – Visit Exhibits

10:30 – 12:00pm   “NFPA 241: Mitigating Risk During Construction”

Eric Camiel, P.E. – JENSEN HUGHES

This presentation will provide an overview of NFPA 241, Standard for Safeguarding Construction, Alteration and Demolition Operations. A largely underutilized code, its enforcement and applicability has become more and more important as construction schedules accelerate, a demand for labor drives less qualified contractors into the industry and the recent prevalence of a return to combustible construction buildings. This presentation will also highlight some recent, local case studies of significant fire events during construction.

12:00 – 1:00pm   Lunch/Visit Exhibits

1:00 – 2:30pm   “Rhode Island-isms: Diving into Some of the Most Confusing Items in the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code”

Kevin Toomey, P.E. – JENSEN HUGHES

Everyone has an appreciation for some of the unique components in the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code. This presentation will be highly interactive with the audience – we welcome immediate feedback on the items discussed. A couple of the subjects that will be covered include the educational occupancy requirements, dealing with storage occupancies, approved electrical panel locations and others. Attendees are encouraged to submit topics ahead of the presentation and, time permitting, we will also open up topic suggestions from the audience during the presentation.
Note: Email any recommended discussion topics to Bill Willett (fcoari@cox.net) that you
        would like to see discussed.

2:30 – 3:00pm   Break – Visit Exhibits

3:00 – 3:30pm   “The Rhode Island State Building Code: Huh? I Am a Fire Official, Why Do I Care About that?”

Kevin Toomey, P.E. – JENSEN HUGHES

The presentation will provide a high-level overview of the fire protection and life safety requirements in the Rhode Island State Building Code…that is not a typo. The responsibilities between building officials and fire department officials have been discussed for years; enforcement of fire protection and life safety related items in the Rhode Island State Building Code is a critical component on new construction and renovation projects. This presentation is meant to educate fire officials on what their colleagues on the building side should be enforcing
related to fire protection and life safety. The goal of this presentation is to make you aware of the fire protection and life safety related items the Rhode Island State Building Code, what is the same as the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code and most importantly what is different.

3:30 – 4:00pm   “Fire Alarm Wireless Technology”

Eric Camiel, P.E. – JENSEN HUGHES

The presentation will cover the basics of the fire alarm wireless technology that is starting to be used on a number of projects. Wireless fire alarm equipment has tremendous applications when correctly utilized but has created some confusion with its application related to the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code. This presentation will highlight the technology’s applicability and illustrate examples of where this technology is envisioned to be seen moving forward.
